Spring Meeting Feb 26, 2022 Online

Based on the current rates of transmission of COVID-19 within the state and the extreme burdens faced by medical workers and educators in this situation, we have decided that it is prudent for us to hold the upcoming UCA meeting over Zoom. While we would love to see everyone in person, and we know from our Fall meeting in Logan that as a group we are extremely responsible with vaccinations, masking, and other precautionary measures (and we applaud everyone for doing so!), we also are aware that many of our members are at risk themselves or interact with others (at home and at school) who are at risk or are unable to be vaccinated at this time. As such, we will proceed with a Zoom meeting. This meeting will include our typical Spring business meeting (with financial reports and an election for a new president-elect) and the presentation of papers. In addition to our general call for papers, we are having a special session on “Classics and Gaming.” Please see the calls for papers copied below. If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to share anything with the UCA presidency, you can email Chuck (oughton_charles@byu.edu) or Seth (seth_jeppesen@byu.edu) with those ideas or concerns.

Important: If you would like to attend the meeting (over Zoom), please use this form to register. You can also submit an abstract through the same form if you would like to present at the conference. Please register and/or submit an abstract by February 15th. We will send out a complete schedule, agenda, and links for the meeting a few days before the conference.

Calls for Papers:

General Call for Papers:

The Utah Classical Association is seeking papers and presentations for its Spring 2022 meeting. We welcome abstracts on any aspect of Classical Studies or Latin and Greek Pedagogy. Proposals should be for a 15-20 minute paper, unless you specify otherwise in your abstract (for instance, poster presentations or shorter pedagogical presentations are also welcomed). Please submit an abstract or description of the presentation (ca. 100-500 words) below. The call for papers will remain open until February 15th, 2022.

“Classics and Gaming” Panel

In addition to our general sessions, we will hold a special panel with the topic “Classics and Gaming” at our Spring 2022 meeting. This panel will explore how the world of gaming (taken broadly to include board games, video games, sports, etc.) engages with Classical antiquity. We welcome papers on new research into the reception of the Classical world in gaming media, pedagogical presentations on ways to use games in the classroom and beyond, and explorations or demonstrations of games from antiquity. This panel will consider the many ways that scholars and educators can use various aspects of gaming to engage and motivate our students. Please submit an abstract or description of the presentation (ca. 100-500 words) below and indicate here that your submission is intended for the “Classics and Gaming” panel. The call for papers will remain open until February 15th, 2022.

We hope you are all hanging in there and staying safe. Please let the UCA presidency know if you have any other questions or concerns at this time. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom next month!

Best wishes,

Chuck Oughton

(on behalf of the UCA presidency)
